About the National Summit on Africa: The Africa Society

The National Summit on Africa is now in its transformation to become the Africa Society. This permanent institution was authorized primarily to facilitate and ensure a series of follow-up activities and actions to implement the National Policy Plan of Action, as approved by the delegates to the National Summit on Africa's Dialogue and Celebration of Africa in Washington, DC, and to continue the process of educating and informing Americans about Africa.

Everybody Asks:
"Is the Internet really the best source for finding information on last-minute travel deals?"

Planning a trip on short notice can ean one of two things, financially speaking: You'll either pay a premium for your lateness or be rewarded with deals from companies trying o fill unsold rooms and seats. Naturally, you'll want to fall into the latter category. These days, Web sites that purport to help you achieve this abound. Some offer direct bookings, others list phone numbers for hotels and travel agencies. The following are a few sites tailored to offering bargains for spontaneous travelers.

11thhourvacations.com:
Specializes in international itineraries with an active bent.

lastminutetravel.com:
Scans the deals touted on other travel Web sites, compiles them on its own, and connects you directly to the provider.

moments-notice.com:
New York - based travel club that emphasizes cruises and global trips.

site59.com:
Offers package deals on themed getaways, mostly for domestic itineraries.

smarterliving.com:
Does'nt offer direct bookings, but alerts you to up-to-date coming bargains and includes links to providers' sites.

travelweb.com:
Books hotels and flights; has a "Click It!" feature that lists upcoming weekend specials.

There are a few caveats.
To make sure you are getting a real bargain, consider calling hotels and airlines to double-check their rates against the prices you've been quoted. Watch for any taxes or special fees that get tacked on to the total cost; they can negate whatever savings that enticed you in the first place. Always get a confirmation number and print out itinerary.
